Snow Leopard

Apple released their latest version of their operating software in August 2009.

Named OS X 1.6 Snow Leopard, this takes 10.5 Leopard and turns it fully 64bit, slimming down the code, saving large amounts of disk space and fine tuning the whole system.

Having used it now for a number of months, there are still a few little bugs surfacing here and there but generally the experience is as perfect as Leopard.

The one thing you really notice about this cat is it’s speed. Snow Leopard slices like a hot knife, making the operating system extremely fast.

Navigating and working within the system really is quick. Once I get into the flow working in Photoshop or After Effects, I tend to work fast, fast, fast and the Snow Leopard definitely keeps up with me.

The upgrade cost me £25 and it was well worth the money.

While the Owls were in the fantastic city state of Singapore, we dined twice at the fast food joint MOS Burger. MOS Burger hails from Japan, and MOS stands for “Mountain Ocean Sun” in case you’re wondering.

As it’s name suggests, this chain serves up burgers and fries. However these are burgers with a yummylicious difference. The usual beef/chicken burgers in a bun are on the menu, but those wanting something interesting could go for a filling tucked in between two rice patties instead.

Choices range from the Tsukune Rice Burger (beef, onions, Teriyaki sauce), the Unagi Rice Burger (eel, seaweed) to the Kinpira Rice Burger (vegetarian). There are over twenty options of burgers!

There are also an array of sides. The Garlic ‘n’ Lemon Mussels and the Butterfly Prawns are the Owls’ favourite treats! Along with the sizzling hot French Fries of course…………

Every meal comes served with neat fuss free practical packaging in a cute minimal white plastic basket. As with most things Japanese this chain is flawless both aesthetically and quality wise.

This is a wonderful interesting Asian take on what is an American icon. While the Owls rarely make trips to fast food joints, MOS Burger is an exception. If only it graced Europe with it’s presence!

A.P.C. London store update

Towards the back of the shop there seems to be a staircase leading down, which could indicate a lower ground level too.

Coming to a particular London street in June, this little shop is a long over due fashion highlight to grace the capitals dirty streets.

The Juicy Owls are extremely excited with this attraction and will give a full review on opening of it’s doors.

Leica D-Lux 4 is an amazing camera.

This 10.1MP camera supports a larger than normal CCD sensor for unbelievably crisp pictures and takes them in 16:9, 3:2 or 4:3 RAW and JPEG formats.

The super-fast f2.0 Leica lens swallows all light available like a black hole, so you can take pictures in dark dark situations and the 24mm ultra wide lens makes up for its limited 2.5 x zoom capabilities.

The camera is fully automatic with face recognition but also fully manual, where everything from the iso, focus, aperture and shutter speeds can be set independently.

The rugged body is tough and well balanced, feeling perfect in the hand.

The camera also records video in 720p HD at 25fps.

Shop around as some dealers are offering a beautiful free brown leather case adding a rich, retro feel to this already stylish camera.

The main thing about the camera is the photo quality. It produces shots with amazing clarity and luminosity, this is partly due to the sensor and the amazing lens, but also testament to the image processing, Leica have set their own curves to produce that “Leica” feel. Something stands out in its pictures, something special.

This camera gives any photographer confidence, confidence that they will capture a scene with amazing detail but also confidence that the camera will work with them, making the photographer more likely to take creative risks.

The camera is known as the son of the M8. I can see why, and since the M8 will set you back a cool £3500, the £500 price tag of the D-Lux 4 is worth every penny.

Whilst browsing around the original and first ever Paul Smith shop in Nottingham last month, the Juicy Owls stumbled upon a wonderful item. The cutest cat print shirt ever!

On close inspection the neko’s seem to be bitching to each other. Whisper, whisper. Their faces angry with frown lines. Kawaii kuni but very kawaii! We love a good contradiction.

On an off white cotton the pink print is bold yet subtle enough not over power the shirt. Its all about being subtle with the Juicy Owls and this hits the spot. As with all Paul Smith items, the finishing and details are outstanding.

On return to London we tracked the shirt down at the Paul Smith shop on Langley Street. It was sat there in the lower corner keeping itself to itself. This is the kinda item that might make it to the sales and be snipped up at a good price but that was too much of a chance to take. A purchase was made.

This kawaii neko shirt is just puuurfect.

A Camp - Colonia.

Currently getting repeated playing at Juicy Owls headquarters is the new album by A Camp. Swede chanteuse Nina Persson of The Cardigans belts out 12 gorgeous tracks for her side project. However, this is no side dish.

Colonia's lush melodies keeps us tuned in with it's orchestral strings and wistful lyrics. This sixties soaked record has American folk running through it's blood with undeniable pop hooks.

Nina's inspirations are 'love, alienation and Swedish melancholy'. On lead single Stronger Than Jesus she croons:
'Who told you love is the Alpha and Omega
And that your heart will lead you to the only one
It is a curse, it's the hammer that will break you
It's a poison hidden in a bon-bon'.
Lyrical subjects are clearly romantic fools or bitter cynics in turn.

Dreamy and delicious, this album is a classy understated affair. Colonia is an investment.

Look at this! Isn't it the dinkiest little gadget ever?! This is the Disney Mickey Mouse MP3 player by Iriver, also known as the Mplayer.

It has been out in Asia for a few years now. However it only hit London's shores in 2008 and hasn't been the hit that it should be!

In the shape of Mickey's head, you can twiddle the player's ears to adjust the volume and to change tracks. This gadget is not just a design cutie, it is a user friendly nugget for fans of the classic Disney character.

Compatible with Windows and Apple operating systems as long as file format is in MP3. Mplayer is definitely a viable alternative to the Ipod Shuffle. This 1GB player comes in a rainbow of different colours, but only in white, black and pink in the UK. Try eBay for other choices but beware of fakes.

At Juicy Owls, Mickey is one of our best friends, and now he can hang round our necks playing our favourite tracks as we roam the urban jungle!

Walkman, iPod, iTunes. 3 things that changed the way we listen to music.

The days of owning music are heading out the window. For me, having access to huge amounts of music, on tap, fulfilling any music craving I have, at any given moment far outweighs been able to hold it on a small hard drive.

Enter Spotify.

Basically this is a music service that streams music content to you and does it for free. Really?!? Yes really. The £££ is made through advertising, usually one 30 second commercial every 20 minutes. Which is not too bad. If you can’t stand the thought of this, you can pay a monthly subscription and the ads will disappear. Perfect solution.

This service could be delivered anywhere in the future, car music systems, radio in your kitchen, mobile phone. Oh yes, this is the next big step, streaming to the iPhone! Mmmmm.

This little game popped along on the iPhone and iPod Touch quietly and with not much fan fare. If you check out the App Store you will see many many reviews showering this game with praise.

Like all great games the idea is pretty simple. Baddies enter the left hand side of the screen and exit on the right hand side of the screen. Your task is to stop their flow by placing an arsenal of weaponry in their way. Once 20 of them cross the exit and your 20 lives are gone, your dead.

The learning curve and skill curve is very well drawn out and you quite easily find yourself settling down and playing a round of this game for a couple of hours.

Once again the iPhone demonstrates it’s leadership in the mobile market, shifting itself from its simple phone background, to takes on the likes of Playstation PSP and Nintendo DS.

“Oh no” thought the Owls! “What’s going on?!?”

The recently added men’s wear pictures on the A.P.C. website are in our eyes dreadfully boring. At the moment 2009 looks as though its gonna be a bad year for A.P.C.

Yes we have had the Nike/A.P.C. trainers and the K-Way/A.P.C. wind breaker and some other rather splendid bits and bobs BUT the style house needs to continue to interject quirks into its pieces or it will fade into the background.

These small idiosyncrasies makes the brand stand out against everything else. Without these little quirks, their clothes become nothing more than an expensive take on GAP!!!

Come on A.P.C. You can do it. Fingers crossed.

Whilst out and about the Juicy Owls came across a new sight in Closet Case. A little jumper from the new Spring / Summer 2009 Viktor & Rolf collection.

In a strange red , verging on pink colour, this kawaii top jumped right off the hanger and sent a shock of instant karma through us. The jumper supports a pair of signature V&R glasses upon a baby blue and white check background.

Along with the jumper there were some interesting vests and T-Shirts and also two very splendid 1950’s style polo neck knitwear pieces. One in a dark blue and one in a lemon yellow. Both were exceptional. Will be interesting to see what else emerges from the House of Viktor & Rolf.

The Juicy Owls are currently drooling over the new Spring 09 A.P.C. / Nike collaboration.

After a simple, classic design, Jean Touitou and his trusty team have re-issued the classic 1975 Nike All Court shoe.

The shoe comes in white with a red swoosh, white with blue swoosh and an all white version. These are very limited and are selling fast!

They are available on the A.P.C. website and End Clothing. We also tracked them down at Kiosk 78 in Leeds. They have a limited stock but are not listed on their website. Best calling them.

UPDATE: We can report that the shoe fits as a standard Nike fitting. They are light weight to wear and extremely comfortable. The US A.P.C. site also stocks the shoe in half sizes.

Vintage, second hand, used.........call it what you want, but other people's cast offs may just be what you've been looking for!
Our lovely friend Bongo bought a white faux fur jacket this winter and boy doesn't she just look loverrrrrly!

We caught her in Maison Bertaux in Soho having a cake. As one of our most stylish friends, Bongo is keen on vintage. However she's always very careful not to be too second hand looking. Get the drift?

Matching vintage with your own wardrobe is key. Wearing everything second hand from top to toe can sometimes look rather................erm...............well dowdy, gimmicky and washed out.

The obvious vantage of vintage is that you're not going to find many around you wearing the same thing, it's that perfect find that possibly no one else has. London's high streets are just full of the same brands-GAP, Topshop, Lee, American Apparel at one end and Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton at the other. It's easy to be caught wearing something others on the same street are wearing!

Mix used with new, high end with low end for your own unique look!

The Stanley Kubrick Archives.

About the greatest film director of all time, this large 543 page book edited by Alison Castle is truly amazing.

Split into two sections, the first half of the book consists of stills only, all in their original aspect ratio, beautifully laid out and covering films from Killer’s Kiss through to Eye’s Wide Shut.

The second half of the book covers the same films but delves into the actual creative process of each film, everything from the initial ideas, the shoot, the post-production and the aftermath is covered. It finishes with information gathered about his unfinished A.I and Napoleon projects.

The book was put together with the help of Kubrick’s wife Christiane, producer Jan Harlan and The Stanley Kubrick Estate and so features many, many wonderful pictures of Kubrick himself.

A must listen to 1968 album by Wendy Carlos. Switched on Bach paved the way for synthetic electronic music, or maybe Moogsic? Hummm. Well, this album could quite easily have fallen flat on its face and aged very quickly, instead it’s fresh and dripping with atmosphere. It takes a complex piece of J.S Bach music and makes it instantly accessible. Praise the Moog synthesiser, praise Wendy Carlos.

The first real let up in this years credit crunched nuclear winter broke today with rain and warmer temperatures. You can simply sit and watch the world go by whilst dipping in and out of cream puff ecstasy. Inflation hit at an all time high today in London where a magazine released in April 2008 for £5, hit the local Oxfam shop with a price tag of £5.99. Someone at Oxfam knows his or her apples. This was still a steal and needed to be purchased.

“I am living in the future” thought Owl J. Well, almost.

When Owl J purchased its first camcorder, it had a manual 2.5 x zoom, was the size of a hefty shoe box and took Video 8 tapes. This was cutting edge.

Then came MiniDV and the camera shrunk to a decent size bottle of shower gel, and this was cutting edge.

MicroMV came.........and went.

The camcorder recently plucked from the credit crunched shopping stage supports full 1080p high definition images and a 4MP stills camera and captures onto SD card. All for under £400 and it fits into your trouser pocket....well almost.
